Drawing in the Prado

Olivia Kemp and Clementine Moyes, recipients of the 2015 Richard Ford Travel Scholarship, have just returned from Spain where they spent two months making studies of the works in the Prado museum. Still full of excitement from her recent trip Olivia says that 'working in The Prado has been an amazing experience.'

'I have discovered the work of artists I had never heard of such as Melendez, Murillo and Zurbaran. Mostly it has forced me to analyze why I love certain paintings but would probably never draw them and why others are instantly appealing. This in turn has taught me a lot about my own work and what I’m looking for going forward.'

Michael Chance is exhibiting new paintings and drawings documenting the inner life and surroundings of Islington Mill.

its varied moods, its madness and serenity, its inward and outward faces, documenting its spaces and
events through observational drawing and painting. He has also made a series of paintings which

Curated by acclaimed watercolour artist Simon Carter, the exhibition - which runs from September 19 - November 7 in the Bentlif II and Bearsted-Bentlif Art Galleries - charts contemporary activity within this artistic method. Jaime Valtierre at Barbican Arts Centre

Jaime Valtierre recently exhibited as part of INTERFACES, an exhibition at Barbican Arts Centre. The event was the result of Magma Collective's involvement (mnemonic City) in an outreach project by Barbican called Fish Island Labs. This project was the result of a joint effort to bring to the Arts Centre the work of those working at the Labs.

Barbican Arts Centre
Opening night: Friday 21st August 6 pm - 9 pm
21st - 23rd August, Saturday 12 pm - 9 pm, Sunday 12 pm - 5 pm

For the exhibition Jaime was be presenting an installation titled 'In Dreams We Dwell'. The work is a multimedia piece that combines the use of traditional and contemporary art and craft technologies including painting, wood work, video animation and projection. It contrasts a series of interconnected narratives that spring from two themes based on two socially distinct
London areas: Hackney Wick and The City of London.

The first subject explores the idea of group as a horizontal organisation rooted on the premise of collective sharing and individual responsibility towards the “goods” of the group. The second relates to an individualistic view of the world based on personal gain and disregard for others.

The work is an artistic response to the experiences gather during the Mnemonic City research period as part of Fish Island Labs / Interfaces.

Public Opening: Thursday 6 August, 7 - 10 pm

'Mercer Chance is proud to present SUMMER DREAM, a joyous meeting of two talented young contemporary painters. Madness, beauty, mystery and humour colour this strange new world of intuitive image making.

In this new series of paintings Katie Brookes has used imagination to bypass her observational work and focus on colour and composition, working along the themes of stereotypical British culture, seaside and leisure in the summertime. Focused on the material qualities of paint and the pure enjoyment of colour, these new works explore exaggerated British-ness now. These bold and ironic escapist fantasies first appeared while Katie was on a rainy residency in Scotland, but they have become a promising avenue for a richly inventive studio practice going forward. In September she will attend the Turps Banana painting school, where she hopes to make her paintings “bigger and more… mad”.

Elizabeth McCarten's recent work explores the idea of a dream evoked by real places being re-presented. When we dream we recycle images and experiences that we have had that day, week or a thought that has been on our mind. Our mind breaks these experiences down and reconstructs them into a series of new images, thoughts and sensations. Working directly from observation, she gathers information before deconstructing and breaking down the image to lyrical lines and marks. Her dream-like colour washes serve as emotional responses to the landscape which is used as a means to recreate a world where imagination and reality can merge together in the freedom of paint. Scenes are reduced to shapes and colours that evoke darkness and light, that invite the viewer to see differently into a landscape of possibilities.'
