Antonia Bruce and First Food Exhibition, Cirencester

Antonia Bruce is founder of the First Food Residency. The resident Mexican artists will be exhibiting as the culmination of their 6 week residency at The Tallet, near Cirencester. They have been working in different practices around the theme of First Foods.

'Surrounding the growing of corn, are the many rituals, offerings, music and dance that have evolved since man first cultivated crops. Antonia Bruce's cyanotypes capture the corn cobs that tower above the farmers. Laid against heavy duty watercolour paper which she paints with a solution of iron  compounds, the silhouettes of her subjects are developed in daylight, creating exquisite shadows on blue. 

Corn is the food stuff of life, the ‘first food’ for many. The natural diversity of maize grown over thousands of years contributes to our treasured bio-diversity, and is an essential resource for mankind. Antonia Bruce has been working on a cooperative exchange between UK and Mexican artists, responding to ‘First Foods’. In Mexico’s Heartland, ‘everyman’ has a perceived right to his own plot ‘La Milpa’ - to grow his own corn, beans and squash.'

Claerwen James at Flowers Gallery and in the Guardian

Claerwen James is exhibiting new work at Flowers Gallery. With a catalogue and foreword by New Yorker critic Adam Gopnik. 

'Claerwen James is known for her painted portraits of young female subjects, which explore the private moments captured by photographic snapshots. By painting directly from photographs, James keeps a deliberate distance between herself and the sitter, in order to observe more closely what may be simultaneously revealed and withheld within the frozen moment in time.'

'They are exhibiting together for the first time. The works are inspired by ancient & modern themes including transformation and magic.

Mary and Daisy Millner have produced a series of paintings, carvings and sculptures that explore the theme of ‘Legend’, named after Man Ray’s exhibition. Large and small scale works will be for sale.

After a residency at Dumfries House in Scotland, Mary’s work is particularly interested in the fairy tale legend. She uses mythical tales as a way into her surreal landscapes which take the form of epic, boldly painted canvases and delicate pencil drawings.

Daisy focuses on the illusion of legends, drawing on the natural and physical world. Waterfalls, sleeping figures, lovers and a disbanded horseman figure are motifs in these decorative carvings and cut out drawings.'

Rossen has a solo show called 'Antilovewise' in the Gallery Cafe, St. Margaret's House in Bethnal Green.
