'A.P.T’s two CREEKSIDE OPEN exhibitions are a personal snapshot of the breadth and diversity of contemporary visual art in the UK today. Lisa Milroy and Richard Deacon have independently selected recent work from one anonymous submission for two shows which will be held at the A.P.T Gallery, Deptford in May and June 2015.

The first exhibition has been selected by Lisa Milroy and includes work by sixty three artists. After two days viewing over 2,100 images, Lisa responded to her selection process in a very personal way, “Following my heart in selecting work for Creekside Open 2015, I responded to the submission by exploring my own artistic interests. I felt intrigued, surprised and delighted by such a diverse, thought-provoking range of work submitted by hundreds of artists.”

A.P.T set up the CREEKSIDE OPEN in 2005 and over the past ten years it has become one of the UK's foremost open competitions for visual artists.'

Anita Kavaja Exhibition in Albania

Anita Kavaja is exhibiting in Tirana, Albania. The exhibition is in cooperation with and supported by the Department of Art and Culture.

The exhibition is of the monotypes and drawings that she made while she was traveling. She is hoping to exhibit them in London in the future.

Speaking about launching London Morgan’s art exhibition, Rachel writes: 'I am delighted to be exhibiting at London Morgan, hopefully my work will resonate with the visitors of the showroom and they will appreciate the fusion of innovation and tradition present in my drawings. Through the process of observation I enjoy learning about plants and their distinctive patterns of growth. Nature exits, it has no preconceived end, plants seek the light and grow. In my work I reflect this by allowing the drawing to spread across the paper in an intuitive way.'

Max Naylor 'Headlands' at Mercer Chance

Max Naylor will be exhibiting recent works at Mercer Chance Studio Gallery (run by alumni Rachel Mercer and Michael Chance). Mercer Chance, 253 Hoxton Street, N1 5LG, London.

‘Naylor’s recent work uses ink on paper to depict spaces that have been observed, remembered and imagined. At times playful and abstract, these drawings are a collaboration between place, self and medium.’

Oliver Malin in conversation with curator Róisín McQueirns

On Thursday 5 February, Gallery Different presents a discussion between artist and filmmaker Oliver Malin and curator Róisín McQueirns, examining the depiction of relationships in Malin's work across both still and moving image, and other examinations of relationships.

The talk will begin at 7pm with an introduction by gallery director Karina Philips on the current annual group show the "Kiss", which places relationships as the contextual theme for the current group show.

'Many reference the economic crash directly: Marco Godoy’s choral video work “Claiming the Echo” (2012) explores the aftermath of the financial crisis in Spain. A choir sings protest slogans that are usually sung at demonstrations in Spain, adapted into a musical piece, using the composer Henry Purcell's scores. And Melissa Kime alludes to it more playfully in her painting “Technicolour Joseph and The Amazing City Bankers” (2013). Meanwhile, Simon Senn’s films deal with human behaviour and patterns of interaction. His film "Just Let Go" sets up the intriguing proposition of dealing with the financial crisis through the creation of filmed cathartic experiences that aim to release anxiety.'

Lina Audzeviciute, Jake Garfield and Melissa Kime in We Could Not Agree

 Lina, Jake and Melissa were all involved in the recent (huge!) group exhibition in Q Park under Cavendish Square. The exhibition included over 100 artists showing sculpture, painting, drawing, installation, film and sound throughout the 20,000 Sq ft circular space. Curators included Geoff Leong, Vanya Balogh & Cedric Christie, and many others, with Jake being involved in curation and Lina and Lissie exhibiting.

Alison Boult in Derwent Art Prize

Kathryn Maple wins Sunday Times Watercolour Competition 2014

Congratulations to Kathryn who has won First Prize in the Sunday Times Watercolour Competition 2014. 
Louis Wise of the Sunday Times writes that "Maple’s astonishing work looks as if it was conceived in the Deep South, but Fat Boy’s is, in fact, a cafe right by where she works, in Trinity Buoy Wharf, far out in east London. She even has lunch there sometimes. Maple, from Maidstone, Kent, is fond of the “odd and out of place in life”, and this slice of Americana in E14 fits the bill. The work is large enough (116cm x 86cm), but small by her standards; she builds each painting up by layering over time and, as this picture shows, is happy to use watercolours in a variety of ways."

Harriet Piercy exhibition

Harriet is showing her recent work in her exhibition 'Portraits of Place' at Kevis House in Petworth, Sussex.

Harriet was selected to be the artist in residence at the 2012 'Works on Paper Fair' at the Science Museum, organised and sponsored by the directors of Kevis House Gallery. The directors have invited Harriet to hold a solo show at the gallery as they were interested to see how her work has developed in the intervening two years.
"Working across a number of locations, Harriet's current work explores the effect of time on lived-in landscapes. She is interested in the changing identities of built environments - their histories, textures and characters that inhabit them. "

Lilias Buchanan's portrait of Richard Strange hung in The House of St. Barnabas

A painting by Lilias is being hung in the club, The House of St. Barnabas. It is a portrait of Richard Strange, the multitalented musician and club night Cabaret Futura founder. BP Portrait Award

David Caldwell, Sophie Levi, Freddy Clark (whose portrait of Josh is pictured above), Carl Randall, Clara Drummond and tutor Julie Held are exhibiting in this year's BP Portrait Award Exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery. David's piece is 77 small portraits all done from short sittings with friends, many of whom are Drawing Year alumni. Show opens 20th June and continues until 15 September.
