Three alumni and Julian Bell in group exhibition (Bristol)

Oliver McConnie (DY 2014), Max Naylor (DY 2012), Mary Roberts-Holmes (DY 2012) and Julian Bell (Senior Faculty) are in an exhibition together in Bristol which opens on 7 April. More details below:

GOTT MATE MUTT

“Tiger got to hunt, bird got to fly;

'Gott Mate Mutt' is an exhibition that explores human nature perceived by the artists in reaction to both Kurt Vonnegut's novel Cat’s Cradle and to current global events. Using Cats’ Cradle as an inspiration the artists including Mary Roberts-Holmes, Jack Friswell, Oliver McConnie, Sam Fleming, Max Naylor and Julian Bell exhibit work focusing on humans’ absurd relationship with destruction.

Neal Jones in British Council touring painting exhibition

Neal Jones (DY 2003) is one of the artists featured in The Painting Show, A touring exhibition by the British Council Limerick City Gallery of Art, Carnegie Building, Pery Square, Limerick, Ireland (09 February 2017 – 16 April 2017). 

Mark Hanson in group exhibition (San Francisco, USA)

A painting by Mark Hanson (DY 2016) has been selected for an exhibition in America. The painting is called Late Afternoon (shown below) and these are the details of the exhibition:

Honouring the Legacy of David Park 
Santa Clara University San Francisco, California, 3-28 April.

David Park (American, 1911–1960) was a painter and founding member of the Bay Area Figurative Movement, known for his thickly painted, intensely colored portraits. Born in Boston, Park moved to Los Angeles in 1928 to study at the Otis Art Institute for a year before dropping out. He went on to teach at the San Francisco Art Institute for many years, where he met at befriended fellow painters Richard Diebenkorn and Elmer Bischoff. Click here to view the catalogue.

Lilias Buchanan: upcoming solo exhibition at Shapero Modern

Artist and musician Lilias Buchanan (DY 2014) is exhibiting new works directly inspired by Richard Brautigan’s 1976 cult classic, Sombrero Fallout: A Japanese Novel.

The assembled works, nine small-scale paintings exquisitely rendered in pencil, watercolour and collage, channel the book’s two parallel narrative threads. The first focuses on a heartbroken American writer who has recently been left by his Japanese lover. His obsessive thoughts about her prevent him from concentrating on a story he is writing, in which a sombrero falls from the sky in a sleepy town in the American southwest. Eventually, and despairingly, the author throws what he has written into the wastepaper basket, but the discarded story continues to write itself, so beginning the second narrative, which recounts a bizarre tale in which the sombrero becomes an object of fascination, attracting enormous crowds and fierce debate before ultimately provoking a civil war. Lilias admits that 'the creation of this body of work and her interest in Brautigan’s novel has bordered on the obsessional', leading her to approach strangers in the street who bore a resemblance to Brautigan’s characters, and asking them to pose for her. Fred Clark solo exhibition

Fred Clark (DY 2012) will be exhibiting recent paintings and drawings in his exhibition Tramuntana which will be open between 21 and 24 March, 10-6pm at 11 Avenue Studios, Sydney Mews, South Kensington, SW3 6HW. Nicola Durvasula, Christopher Le Brun and Humphrey Ocean in Drawing Biennial 2017

Nicola Durvasula (RDS Senior Faculty) is exhibiting at the current Drawing Biennial 2017 at the Drawing Room. Her drawing is shown above. Also included in the exhibition are Christopher Le Brun,  William Kentridge, Humphrey Ocean, Oona Grimes, Chantal Joffe, Rose Whylie and Grayson Perry. The exhibition runs until 26 April with the online auction from 12 to 26 April.

Rosie Vohra in exhibition at Bosse & Baum gallery

Rosie Vohra (DY 2014) is part of a group exhibition at Bosse & Baum gallery that opens on Friday 17 March 6-9 pm:

Herland, A Visual Book Club / Bosse & Baum have invited six artists on a residency, with one week to work with one another and respond to the space. Drawing on the feminist sci-fi classic, Herland, the artists involved wish to disprove stereotypical expectations of what an all-female environment fosters, just as the women of Herland surprise the expectations of the trio of male intruders in Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s novella. More info here or on facebook. Address: 133 Copeland Road, London SE15 3SN.

Francesca Mollett (DY 2015) is showing new paintings in the exhibition Rose Madder at The Benevolent Association of Excellent Solutions, 8 Kingfisher Sq, London SE8 5TW.

Christopher Green featured in The Evening Standard

Christopher Green (DY 2008) was featured in an article in London's Evening Standard last week. Christopher's large-scale ink drawing of a busy street scene (for which he was awarded the 2017 Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize) was drawn entirely from life. 'Chris spent two months outside Liverpool Street’s branch of McDonald’s drawing the street. He worked on the piece during from April to June last year, finishing it on June 23, the day of the EU referendum. He admitted that he spent so long working outside McDonald’s that he ended up befriending the staff.' Read the full article here.

Henry Gibbons Guy solo exhibition

Josias Figueirido in group show at The Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia

Josias Figueirido (DY 2010) is taking part in a group show at The Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia. 'Surface Forms' showcases silk-screened yardage designs created through the museum’s Apprentice Training Program. The exhibition, which is open until 25 June, presents dozens of original designs ranging in color, style, and subject matter, alongside swatch books from the museum’s archive. Opening: 17 March, 6–8 pm. More info here.

Kirsty Buchanan in Royal Watercolour Society annual exhibition

Kirsty Buchanan (DY 2013) is included in the Royal Watercolour Society 2017 Exhibition

Christopher Green wins First Prize at the Lynn Painters-Stainers Prize 2017

Congratulations to two of our alumni who won the top two prizes at the Lynn Painters-Stainers Prize 2017 on Monday night, the opening evening of the exhibition.

Christopher Green (current Faculty and DY 2008) was awarded the First Prize (£ 15,000) for his large drawing ‘Lunchtime, Liverpool Street’ (143x128cm) – see image below:

Michael Chance (DY 2013) was awarded the Second Prize (£ 4,000) for his painting 'Self Portrait in the Peanut Factory' (oil on board, 122x152cm). Michael’s painting is a reinterpretation of Rembrandt’s famous painting Danae (Hermitage, Saint Peterburg).
